When deciding to remodel a kitchen, there are a lot of options available. It is easy to get caught up in all the fancy equipment and shiny new objects, but keep in mind you want your kitchen to last through the years and not fall to yesterday’s trends.
At Tallen Builders of Ocala, Fla., we would like to help you with your kitchen remodel. If you are planning to remodel your kitchen, read on to make sure you don’t make these common kitchen upgrade mistakes.
Costly and Unnecessary Upgrades
Custom cabinets can be very expensive; however, going with a factory made-to-order cabinet offers some additional benefits. Most factory-built cabinets offer warranties of up to 25 years. By going with a factory option you receive a controlled crafting environment, reduced risk of wood splitting and warping, computerized crafting tools that offer more precision than when done by hand and heat-baked finish which is more durable and longer lasting than air-dried paint.
Some options can quickly increase costs, and most of us are on a budget. Stay away from glazed, distressed and crackled finishes, because these can drastically increase cabinet costs and start to look dated as trends change.
A wine cellar is another item that might seem cool to have, but more often than not, isn’t used to its full potential.
Don’t buy professional equipment unless you are ready to incur all the additional costs and problems that can arise. Most units are heavy, and you will need to make sure your floor or basement is built to handle the extra weight. It might sound nice to have that extra fancy stove, but you also need the expensive hood to remove the smoke. There are additional costs to consider when using a higher end piece of equipment, such as your energy bill.
Plan your lighting. Don’t just go out and purchase any kit from a home improvement retailer. Make sure to invest into your lightning fixtures and type of lighting. Don’t use box florescent lights when you can opt for a nicer fixture to add some color and shape to your kitchen. Look for LED options, which will let you save on energy costs and select different color variations to set the mood.
As you can see, kitchen upgrades can be costly and there are many upgrade options available to the consumer. Remember that you don’t need to upgrade to everything you see in a magazine. Another tip: Don’t move anything around; keeping your current layout will save a lot of money by itself.
