Height and Placement
One of the first steps will be where to place your artwork. A lot of people tend to hang their artwork too high and it can disrupt the flow of your room. Try to hang the piece so that the center of the artwork is the same level as your eye. As an example, it is common for galleries to hang their artwork around 57 to 60 inches. This places the picture around the average height of most people.
If you are significantly taller than 5’10” you could move your artwork higher to around 62 inches. We wouldn’t recommend going too much higher than that.
Additionally you want to be conscious of the other components of your room. Does the picture fit well with the furniture? What about the lighting? We recommend keeping the picture closer to the furniture instead of farther away; this makes the room feel more cohesive.
Single Piece or Arrangement
There are slightly different techniques when deciding to hang a single painting or multiple pieces of art as a group. Above, we discussed how to hang a single piece, so let’s dive into hanging multiple pieces of art together.
First, look at the group of artwork as a single piece. This will be helpful for when you try to find the “middle” while aligning the art on your wall.
Secondly, make sure to hang the largest piece of the left and then smaller pieces can be staggered and arranged to the right of the largest piece. This is one of the most pleasing layouts to the eye.
Durability
The last factor to keep in mind is the strength of the supports for the art piece. For lighter pieces, you can sometimes get away with just a nail in the wall, but if you want to do it the right way, there are a few more steps. If you do decide to just use a nail, make sure to drive it into the wall at a 45 degree angle for more support. A nail driven straight into the wall might slowly fall out and drop your picture.
Check the wire and supports on the back of the piece to make sure they are sturdy and aren’t stressed when you lift the painting. If your art piece is very heavy, try to find a stud in the wall to drill into for additional support. If you can’t align your image with a stud, use a picture hanging hook.
A quick tip – if you need to drill a hole in the wall, use a sticky note folded in half just below the spot where you want to drill. This makes a great little shelf to capture the dust and debris that will otherwise fall on your floor.
