How to Improve Your Home Storage – Tallen Builders LLC : Tallen Builders LLC

Many homes lack decent storage, leaving the homeowners’ belongings out in the open for everyone to see. All that clutter can cause some serious stress!

At Tallen Builders in Ocala, FL, we are general contractors with ample experience in the business of home building. Here are some of our home storage tips so that there is a place for everything and everything is in its place.

Built-in Wall Storage

Built-In Wall Storage

Storage that is sunken into the wall is a great way to add storage without taking up space in a room. Most interior walls are hollow between the studs, so you might as well take advantage of this space with shelving. If you do decide to add this type of storage though, we highly recommend using a contractor for the remodel. You don’t want to accidentally cut into important plumbing and wiring or ruin any of the support beams.

Cabinetry

Cabinets are some of the prettiest and most useful types of storage for your home. Take a look around your home and see if there are any spaces that could accommodate cabinetry. In the kitchen, consider using cabinets that extend all the way to the ceiling. You also don’t have to feel obligated to only put cabinets in the kitchen or bathroom. Try adding them in places like a den, mudroom or guest bedroom for extra storage help.

Alcoves

Add a cozy nook with the bonus of ample extra storage by creating an alcove in your home. On either side of the window add two floor-to-ceiling built in cabinets, then set up a bench with some comfortable cushions between the cabinets just below the window. Add even more storage by using smaller cabinets for the bench. You’ll be shocked how much you can fit in this space!

Under the Stairs

Use Space Under the Stairs

This one may seem like a no-brainer. If you have stairs, utilize the empty space under them to conceal more of your belongings. You can either hollow out the space and use it to store larger items like vacuums and mops or you can fill the space with drawers or shelving. If you decide to utilize the area under your stairway, make sure to contact your local building department or a contractor. Some building codes require special provisions to be made before using this space.

Beneath the Bed

Unless you like the aesthetic of a very low bed, we recommend raising it to utilize the space underneath. Either use cinderblocks or special bed raisers to lift your bed off the ground as much as you want. Simply place a long bed skirt around the base to hide your belongings. You can also buy bed frames with storage built-in to make your belongings easier to reach.

Abundant storage will help keep your home organized and spacious. Whether you’re in the market for a new home or are ready to remodel, we at Tallen Builders can install the built-in storage you need.
